Intro

This blog's purpose is to chronicle my journey, which I think will be a means of catharsis for me, but the main reason I'm publishing it online is in hopes that it will raise BRCA genetic testing awareness and maybe even help others along their own journey. When it came time to make decisions regarding my medical care, I found that the blogs of other women in similar circumstances were the most helpful for me.

L's Operation

My sister L had her oophorectomy yesterday. She's such a tough cookie that when I was driving her home after the surgery, I was pretty surprised when she told me "Just get your ovaries checked as long as you can." She was clearly in a lot of pain. It was heart breaking and terrifying all at once. I hate seeing her hurting. On top of that, it was like looking through a window into my future.

The next day she's in much better spirits and tells me it's not that bad after all. Once she got medication, her pain was manageable. The lesson to be learned here is: have your pain medication with you before you leave the hospital.

L is scheduled to have her mastectomy and reconstruction on 12/28/12. I'm nervous for both of us. I'll get to see exactly what to expect pain/recovery wise, which is both good and bad. Stay tuned!
